Esau rejected his inheritance. He preferred a mess of pottage. We learn from Hebrews 12:17 that his repentance with tears was not acceptable to God. Esau lost his soul in a moment and his repentance in tears was not acceptable to God. “For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears” (Hebrews 12:17). He had to choose between the things of God on the one hand and a pottage of lentils on the other, and he chose the pottage of lentils.
